It is less than half a century, since the wealth of crude oil was discovered in sand dunes of Arabia in Middle East. Though the native nomadic communities of these countries became rich nations, their progress became a reality, only by the support of literate and skilled professionals from other nations, who were employments by the Sheik of Middle Eastern. The earnings by these expatriates fueled the economies of many nations. The recent revolts that have evidently escalated in Libya, Egypt and Syria that hit new heights today, are drawing the attention of the entire world, as it could amount to a major disaster to the economy of many nations.
Rebels have seized two strategic cities Zlitan and Zawiya in Libya. Efforts are on to vacate foreigners from the country. It shows that destabilized government forces are losing grounds to the opponents who are competent and determined to instill a change in governance. With Brega, the prominent port city of Libya being taken over by the Rebels earlier, it would take a toll on the livelihood and commodity costs. It is estimated that over 1,00,000 people from other countries are stranded in Libya. Since many decades these oil rich countries were a paradise for skilled professionals hailing from other nations, but now many have lost their lives and all that they had.

In Egypt, a public protest has erupted against the deaths of five policemen as a result of a shoot out by Israeli forces on Thursday. The Egypt condemned Israel strongly and has called back their Ambassador to Israel. Israel though had claimed that it happened amidst the chase of alleged Palestinian militants but has assured to probe the deaths. According to Egyptian officials Israeli forces had chased and shoot at number of people suspecting them as militants and many were killed, including the policemen. Egypt’s Sinai desert region is presumed to be increasingly lawless with a rise in militant activities inspired by al-Qaeda, after the removal of Mubarak. A country that is rich in heritage and historical locales, popular as a tourism destination is no more a safe place for travelers.

Media reported killing of at least 40 people by security forces of Syrian government, while firing on anti-government protesters after Friday prayers. The deaths were reported in southern Deraa province thought a few were killed in Homs, the western city. The world reaction came on Thursday, when the US urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down and EU wanted to expand its sanctions against Syria where as the Russia rejected this move. More so, Syrian government has imposed restrictions on foreign journalists. “Mr. Assad failed to keep up the promise to stop the security forces, by firing on protesters, as per the statement of activist and internet video postings”, recalled a correspondent.

The oppressed are always provoked to react against the lawlessness of the governance. In a way people of these nations have woken up to the call to claim their rights.

Over 45,000 Verizon workers are now on strike touting Verizons refusal to bargain and to bring a stop to the Corporate GREED and Verizon’s attack on the middle class. The Strike which took effect on August 9, 2011, continues to heat up as workers fed up with not being heard and having to give up benefits that hurt pay and healthcare benefits. Union 1036 – the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and IBEW are on strike from New York, New England to Virginia to protest the company’s attacks on middle-class workers and retirees. Union workers are walking picket lines all around New York – in front of jobs sites, wireless stores and central offices – bringing the fight to Verizon’s doorstep and citing SCABS to people not honoring the strike and crossing the picket lines.

The disgruntal workers reference that in the last four years aloneVerizon made more than $19 billion in profits and compensated their top five executives more than a quarter of a billion dollars. And on June 22 Verizon pushed proposals that would let them outsource more jobs, including sending jobs overseas, slash sick days, eliminate benefits for workers who get hurt on the job and cut the healthcare benefits they promised retirees. And striking workers said that Verizon corporate haven’t budged. Creating masses labor concerns and questioning the value Verizon President Lowell McAdam is placing on Verizon’s union workers. Some of the CWA workers complaints is that Verizon’s CEO, Ivan Seidenberg, takes home $55,000 PER DAY. But Verizon put over 100 bargaining demands on the table for a new contract that hits the average Verizon worker for a $12,000 pay cut over the life of the contract. OUCH, as workers are struggling just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the Family Table. How can Corporate Executives continue to ignore their employees needs and the economy, while pocketing enormous annual salaries and bonuses? Even Warren Buffet stated that each Corporate Executive and our Congressman should for several years live on an annual amount of $21,000.00 per year for themselves & their families. Buffet shared his thoughts on the Charlie Rose TV Show live at the studio in New York yesterday.

Bloomberg announced before the closing bell that Delta Airlines turned out to be the Fighter Jet of stocks today, one of the best performers on Wall Street stated by Adam Johnson & Matt Miller . Delta is continuing to hire employee’s and expand the airways, being confident & stable in business and flight among-st an industry that has been hard hit by increasing fuel prices and other concerns.

The Dow Jones and other markets across the world continued to stay in the RED with loses across the board in most of the sectors. Adding to the downturn, was the failed hopes that France and Germany would create a Euro Bond. Financiers, investors and traders were disappointed that the only real accomplishment that came from the Merkel & Sarkozy meeting, which they felt was important and necessary to disclose, was the even more disappointing announcement of a financial-transaction tax for the Euro region. Adding no explanation of the details of what such a tax would entail, only that it would be disclosed in September. Thus adding to the stressor’s of Europe with other developments putting a stop to short selling in many regions.

Looks like no Pizza Celebration today, like Matt Miller & others enjoyed the other day at the NYSE, as Global Leaders, governments, and the stock markets continue the finger pointing back and forth about transparency, truth, the who, the what and the where that has created the decades of palor tricks and instability.

And with the continued concerns, in July the New York Times reported that “The S.E.C., which has the largest responsibility under Dodd-Frank, alone has missed 54 deadlines, according to Davis Polk. In June, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission decided to formally postpone some derivatives rules for up to six months.”

What will make the people and the world finally pay attention, how much will it take for individuals to stand up , how much risk are we willing to take and continue to endure? What will make it enough for us to want to turn things around, since the speculation, charts, theories and the analysis does not seem to help lately. It takes focus and attention to not let the elite few misuse, steal & drink at the “Money Trough” of the global sweat equity & savings of many. To name the least.

It could be stated, that without education we will blunder and slumber, but through education we will climb and soar. The journey of our species has shown repeated advancements of creativity and technology as a result of perpetual education. Without continually marching forward through ever advancing study and expanding our minds we may have ceased our evolution and destined our extinction. Education has been essential to the fulfillment of our individual and collective being. It is through this intellectual and intuitive development and the resultant greatness of mind that we have catapulted our civilization across the world. When symbolic language and written alphabets emerged, stone tablets, papyri, vellum, parchments and tree leafs became the documents of our progress and the birth and offspring of the first and subsequent great and classical books of inspired wisdom.

Our road to inspired education lay through reading and understanding of the great classical books. We cannot claim to be truly educated unless we have become acquainted with such literary masterpieces of our world or at least our tradition. These great books have endured, for they are what the common voice of humanity has come to call the finest creations in writing. From epoch to epoch, new masterpieces have been written and have won their place in our list of great tomes. The process of such literary change will continue as long as we think, become inspired and write. It is the task of each generation to reassess their world or tradition in which they live, to discard what they cannot use, and to bring into context with the distant and immediate past the most recent contributions to the great masterworks. We constantly need to recapture and re-emphasize and bring to bear upon our present problems the wisdom that lies in the works of our greatest and masterful thinkers.

Though we do not live in any time but the present, we are wise to want the voices of great and enduring thinkers to be heard again and again because they help us live greater and more inspired lives now. Their great books shed light on all of our basic problems and it is folly to do without any light that becomes available. Reading and understanding great classical books provide us a standard by which we may judge all other writings. Without such masterpieces of literature through time we are reduced to objects of propaganda and subordination. They strengthen our minds and represent great educational instruments for our youth and aged. This education may be considered liberal for it liberates our minds from the constraints of mediocrity. For centuries liberal education was offered primarily, if not only, to those with economic, social or political position and the vocational education was provided for those more common. But today greater numbers can educate themselves with the inspired classics throughout their lives. Every book we consume leads to another which amplifies, modifies or even contradicts those before it, all which strengthen our minds and develops the character of our souls. By educating ourselves on the great principles of truth we free ourselves of the superstitious and pseudo-mysterious.

Our quest for education began at the dawn of history and continues to the present day. The spirit of civilization is the spirit of such educational inquiry. Its dominant elements have been the logos or the reasoned, ordered, and spoken word, knowledge and wisdom and gradually its many specialized -ologies. Nothing has remained uninvestigated or undiscussed in its pursuit and no proposition has been left unexamined. The exchange of ideas has been held to be the path to the realization of the potentialities of our race or species. The great books of antiquity and of today are the means of understanding our society and ourselves. They contain the great ideas that dominate us without knowing it. There is no comparable repository of our tradition than these great masterpieces. Leave these masterpieces unread for a few generations and we will put an end to the spirit of our inquiry and begin our decadence and fall. Such great books have salvaged, preserved and transmitted traditions and perpetuated our progress. They hold before us the habitual vision of greatness and of virtue. These great classics have endured because great thinkers in every era have been lifted beyond themselves by the inspiration of their example, cause and soul. In their company the ordinary world is transfigured and seen through the eyes of wisdom and genius and some of their vision becomes our own. The aim of such learning is human transformation, refinement and excellence for it is the education of free or liberated human beings. By becoming liberally educated our minds can operate well in all fields and can be at home in the world of conceptual ideas and the world of practical and perceptual affairs.

Our liberal education is not merely indispensable; it is unavoidable, for nobody can decide whether they are going to be a human being. The only question open, is whether we will be an ignorant, undeveloped one or one who has sought to reach the highest point we are capable of attaining. Our determination about the distribution of the fullest measure of this education will measure our loyalty to the best in our own past and our total service to the future of the world.

To close this brief piece of prose may we all be inspired by a quote by Giorgio Vasari concerning the great genius Leonardo Da Vinci.

“Heaven sometimes sends us beings who represent not humanity alone but divinity itself, so that taking them as our models and imitating them, our minds and the best of our intelligence may approach the highest celestial spheres. Experience shows that those who are led to study and follow the traces of these marvelous geniuses, even if nature gives them little or no help, may at least approach the supernatural works that participate in his divinity.”

May we all continue with our inspired education through imbibing the classical writings of the great geniuses.
